What You Need To Know Before Taking Bikram Yoga

A Bikram yoga video will tell you how to perform the yoga poses and what you should watch out for. You will see the poses being performed by trained proffessionals or yogis. A typical class is quite hot, around 105F and people will be sweating a lot during the length of the class. 26 postures are performed in sequence. One can get a Bikram yoga video and practise during hot season or practice in a heated room. The sweating aspect of this yoga makes the stretching more effective, among other things.

You will notice in class that each step is practiced very slowly. This is not like an aerobics class with quick movements but requires deep focus and concentration. It’s important to keep your fluids up and drink lots of water as the class usually runs for 90 minutes.

All people of all age groups can start doing Bikram yoga. The heat may be a factor for older people or young kids so speak to a qualified professional before beginning lessons. It’s often a good idea to bring along a small towel to wipe your face and also a larger towel to put over your mat to stop it from becoming slippery, or otherwise take an anti-slip mat.

A video can often be just as good as attending a Bikram yoga class. Through the video close ups are normally shown with each pose and from different angles so you can get a good idea how to do them yourself.

Bikram yoga is practised in a hot room. So the clothes should be worn accordingly. Minimum clothes are preferred due to hot environment inside the room. Clothes should be selected carefully as they show one’s personality. Clothes that you like should be worn as they increase self confidence.

For men it is advised that shorts and a tank top be worn. Avoid any long clothing in which you may feel restricted as some of the poses are quite difficult.

For women, leotards or shorts and tank tops are usually worn. Find something that makes you feel more confident if you are going to be practicing with other people.

Keep these tips in mind next time you attend Bikram Yoga, wear light clothing, keep water levels up, watch out for slippery mats and have fun.
